Values

Staff, family, and people receiving supports share their experiences in their own words.

Jamie's story
I would like to brag about quite a profound ability I have - to feel good. As Janis Joplin sang "feeling good was good enough for me" and indeed that's sometimes all I can muster. The Advocates have played a primary role in achieving sanctuary, peace of mind, and ...s feeling good! Read Jamie's full story.

Diane's story
It's 4:30 in the morning and I'm on the phone with an imaginary doctor (imaginary doctors are always available and even answer the phone themselves). My mother, age 89 with Alzheimer's, woke me up a few minutes ago to tell me the doctor just called and that he needs to see her immediately. When I ask her the doctor's name, she answers, "Shimshun." (Not one of her doctors). Read Diane's full story.

John's story
My name is John P. I live at home with my mom, dad and Auntie Mary. I come to Advocates day program Monday through Friday. I have been coming to the Advocates day program since 1993, for over 15 years. I really like to come to the day program. I have learned many things here. I also like coming here because it would be too boring for me to stay at home all day long. Read John's full story.

Elsa's story
My name is Elsa. I have lived in Advocates residential for a while now. I live at Natick Village now. I attend The Advocates day program, located at 250 Eliot Street. I used to work at the workshop and it was located in Framingham, Massachusetts. I came to the day program when it was in the grey building. At that time, I learned to cook and bake. We used to go on many outings at the time. We used to go to picnics at the park. In between time, we were at the Center. Read Elsa's full story.

Maureen's story
Through Advocates, I have been given the opportunity to live in a beautiful community with my wonderful husband. I have been here now for three years and have remained out of the hospital and respites for as long! It's been during these three years that Advocates opened my eyes as well as helping me to open my life to the light of happiness and success. Read Maureen's full story.

Michelle's story
I have worked at McLaughlin House as a licensed practical nurse since 2005. As a healthcare professional, I consider mine to be the role as caretaker, teacher, counselor and other functions as needed. In working with our eight residents, I realize that there are times when our roles are reversed. Those are the moments that we both come to see the abilities our clients possess. On many occasions they might not realize the impact they make on the lives around them. In other cases, they are acutely aware of the gifts they have to share. Read Michelle's full story.
