Program Philosophy


The philosophy of Advocates Structured Outpatient Addiction Program is that we see people with substance abuse and/or other psycho-logical challenges as people first. Therefore, we built the program on the basis of the recovery model. Recovery is understood as a process of changing behaviors, feelings and thoughts about substance use, emotional difficulties, life and self.

• Psychosocial evaluation, monitoring, and treatment
• Behavioral assessment & behavior treatment& recovery planning
• Group & individual counseling on substance abuse topics
• Daily Co-occurring disorders groups
• Separate men's & women's groups on gender specific substance abuse issues
• Toxic drug screens
• Psycho-educational skills groups (e.g. emotional regulation, life skills, etc.)
• Family engagement work
• Life skills training/education
• Identification of community and sociall support systems
• Case management & consultation
• Psychiatric assessment & psychopharmacological treatment by psychiatrist or nurse practitioner
• Aftercare/discharge planning

Program Information


How do I pay for SOAP?
We are contracted with and accept Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership(MBHP), Network Health Plan, Neighborhood Health Plan, Medicare A&B with MassHealth and Fallon, as well as private pay arrangements. We can also accept other insurances that cover this level of care.

Hours of Operation
The program will be offered weekdays. Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.(excluding holidays)
Length of treatment is tailored to meet the needs and goals of individual clients.

Admission Criteria


• Men and women must be age 18 or over
• A minimum of 24 hours of being alcohol and drug-free (clients who attend under the influence will be asked to leave but can return the next day) is required.
• There must be an expressed desire for treatment.
• Must be verbal, cooperative and stable enough to participate in groups and case management.
• Cannot be actively suicidal or homicidal
• Cannot require medical detoxification
• Members may be taking methadone and linked to a community methadone maintenance program or PCP. We also accept patients who take suboxone.
• Must have adequate self care skills to remain in the community.

• Clients are expected to be alcohol & drug free (clients who attend under the influence will be asked to leave but can return

• Alcohol & other drugs are not to be brought onto Advocates' premises.
• Be respectful of yourself, others & staff
• Clients expected to be on time for groups & appointments.
• There is no punishment for honesty; if relapse occurs we want to know so we can help.
• Clients are responsible to respect the confidentiality of others in the group.

  • Intellectual or developmental disabilities or co-occurring mental illness and developmental disability
  • Prader-Willi Syndrome
  • Autism and pervasive developmental disabilities
  • Acquired or traumatic brain injury
 
We also provide support services for:
  • Deaf adults with mental illness or a developmental disability
  • Families who are supporting a family member with a disability
  • Elders living in the community who may have a mental illness or substance abuse disorder
  • Adults with a mental health diagnosis in jail or re-entering the community
  • Youth in transition from foster care
  • Individuals and families who are homeless or at risk for homelessness
