Fall 2007 Group Descriptions
Anger Management for Developmental Disabilities — This group gives adults with DD an opportunity to have an understanding of how anger manifests itself for each group member. In addition, the group provides a supportive setting in which members learn and practice coping mechanisms to effectively manage feelings of anger. Anxiety management — Anxiety can be associated with many distressing symptoms such as panic attacks, excessive worrying, physical tension, and social discomfort or isolating. This group for adults provides a supportive setting in which to explore ways of understanding, managing, and diminishing anxiety. Choices Group — This group has the intention of engaging adults in treatment, assessing motivation, and providing weekly support services until it is determined that client is ready for individual treatment or a more specific group modality. Co-ed Substance Abuse — This group offers adults the opportunity to understand the dynamics of addictive behavior, recognize relapse triggers, and develop relapse prevention plans. Support is offered to help maintain a chemical free lifestyle and begin to make healthy life choices. Early Sobriety — Group participants will learn warning signs of relapse, understand the impact that using has on their life, explore the roots of substance use, and learn practical skills to manage stress and other triggers of relapse. Latency Age Social Skills — Activity based co-ed group for children (ages 8-12). Each group session focuses on a specific social skill, i.e. boundaries, making friends, saying "no", anger management, self-esteem, social cues, etc. Life Skills — Loosely based on the DBT Modules. Adults will learn and practice skills from each module including; Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation and Distress Tolerance. Group participants MUST be able to attend group, follow through with weekly skill assignments, commit for a year, sign a contract and otherwise be committed to improving their life. Open Art Studio — Studio time allows for independent art work, as well as, guided activities. Modalities that will be explored include; music, poetry, dance, writing, journaling, painting, sculpting…endless possibilities! Free, no insurance required! Open Music Jam — Music is a good way to expresses yourself, relax and be social! Develop your talents and share them with others. No Music Experience Necessary! If you have an instrument you can bring it and if you don’t just come! Feel free to just come to sit back and enjoy the music. ROADS (Reentry Opportunities for the Advancement and Development of Skills) — ROADS was developed to improve public safety by helping formerly incarcerated individuals with the transition from prison to community. Topics discussed include reintegration to the community, relapse prevention, mental health, employment support, and time management. Spanish speaking Medication management — The goal of this once-monthly group is to facilitate med management in a bilingual milieu. Provides opportunity for young adult’s w/dual diagnosis to give and receive support. Stress Management — A small group format to discuss and practice stress management. Adults will learn simple and effective techniques for reducing stress and improving health and well-being. Women’s Anger Management — This is a 12-week group for women 18 and up. Focus is on concrete strategies for reducing/preventing anger and making healthier decisions around how to express it. Members will learn cognitive strategies, relaxation exercises, and assertiveness. Women's Dual Diagnosis — For women with affective and anxiety disorders who have the ability and the desire to develop insight. The focus is on triggers for relapse and decompensation, taking personal responsibility for ones life, recovery as a lifestyle change, living life on life's terms, and being proactive in treatment. |
